Stere

cut into 1-meter-long logs (figure 1). A stere is an apparent cubic metre: it represents a pile of logs 1 metre long, 1 metre wide and 1 metre high. As the logs are more or less twisted and conical, there are gaps between them. The wood material represents 60 to 75% of the volume occupied: a stere represents 0.6 to 0.75 m3 of wood material, depending on the straightness and size of the logs.

Stone cut

(figure 2). There's the same amount of wood in a 1 m stere as in a stere cut at 50 or 30 cm. But the wood takes up less space (the pile is lower). This settling phenomenon is due to the shape of the logs, which are more or less twisted: when they are cut, the pieces are straighter, they stack better, and the gap between the logs is reduced.

Cuttings by the meter

(Figures 2 and 3). In these cases, we can no longer talk in terms of steres, but for everyone's understanding, we'll use the terms recut stere or reconstituted stere. These two quantities are different and depend on the working method chosen by the operators. They do not represent the same actual volume of wood, and are therefore not invoiced at the same price.

Per ton

Some companies prefer to use the ton as a unit of quantity, which is easy to understand when you have a truck nearby. But it's important to remember that the same volume of wood weighs less depending on whether it's green or dry. The price of the product therefore depends on the density of the wood at the time of sale.
